What Can We Learn from Nearby Agns?
In a meeting largely devoted to surveys of distant, luminous AGNs, it is instructive to examine what we know about AGNs in very nearby galaxies. Nearby AGNs are important for several reasons. Since AGNs derive their power from accretion onto central black holes, the statistics of AGNs serve as a crude surrogate to delineate the demography of massive black holes in galaxies—a topic of considerab...
متن کاملThe X-Ray Zurich Environmental Study (X-ZENS). I. Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of active galactic nuclei in galaxies in nearby groups
We describe X-ray observations with Chandra and XMM-Newton of 18Mgroup ∼ 1–6× 10 13 M⊙, z ∼ 0.05 galaxy groups from the Zurich ENvironmental Study. The X-ray data aim at establishing the frequency and properties, unaffected by host galaxy dilution and obscuration, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in central and satellite galaxies, also as a function of halo-centric distance. X-ray point-source ...
متن کاملTowards a Complete Census of AGNs in Nearby Galaxies: A Large Population of Optically Unidentified AGNs
Using Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy, we investigate the ubiquity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a complete (≈ 94 percent), volume-limited sample of the most bolometrically-luminous galaxies (LIR, 8−1000 μm & (0.3–20) ×10 10 L⊙) to D < 15 Mpc. Our analyses are based on the detection of the high-excitation emission line [NeV]λ14.32 μm (97.1 eV) to unambiguously identify AGN activity. We find that ...
متن کاملObscuration and circumnuclear medium in nearby and distant AGN
Some recent results on the physical and statistical properties of nearby and distant AGN are presented. I first discuss the properties of “elusive” AGNs, i.e. obscured AGNs which do not show a Seyfert-like spectrum in the optical. Then I present preliminary results from a detailed study of the contribution of obscured AGNs and of their host galaxies to the infrared cosmic background. Finally I ...

We are conducting a search for supermassive black holes (SMBHs) with masses below ∼107 M⊙ by looking for signs of extremely low-level nuclear activity in nearby galaxies that are not known to be AGNs. Our survey has the following characteristics: (a) X-ray selection using the Chandra X-ray Observatory, since x-rays are a ubiquitous feature of AGNs; (b) Emphasis on late-type spiral and dwarf gal...
